Spotlight Session/New Technology: LUMA Vision All-In-One 3D Imaging Catheter

One of the most exciting and innovative technologies for Atrial Fibrillation ablations shown was the LUMA Vision all-in-one visualization catheter system. Though current navigation systems are very good, the LUMS Vision has developed a unique, truly all-in-one system.

Shephal Doshi, MD

In a Spotlight Session featuring New and Emerging Technologies in Arrhythmia Management, Dr. Shephal Doshi of the Pacific Heart Institute in Santa Monica, CA gave a presentation on the LUMA Vision “Advanced 3D Navigation and Imaging for True Anatomical Guidance in an Era of Cardiac Therapies.”

LUMA Vision: The VERAFEYE catheter is a novel ultrasound-enabled catheter with orbital view, imaging all structures around the catheter with an unprecedented field of view.

How the LUMA Vision System Works

A catheter with an orbital 3D ultrasound and a 360° field of view spins at a few 1000 revolutions per minute acquiring 3D data and then reconstructs a 3D anatomy of the heart. This creates a real-time ultrasound image of the catheter and annotates the lesions it creates.

The digital scanning can be manipulated at the console without moving the catheter. This comprehensive, all-in-one visualization catheter does both digital real-time 3D imaging and navigation inside the heart.

LUMA Vision is a privately owned Irish/German company with offices in Dublin and Munich.

Pre-Recorded Demonstration

In a pre-recorded demonstration using an animal’s heart, we watched as Dr. Doshi did a pull down of the catheter and in 60 seconds created a 3D Computed Tomography-like rendering of the inside of the heart. Dr. Doshi showed how it matched an actual CT view of the same heart.

Editor’s Comments
Editor's CommentsDr. Doshi’s presentation blew me away! This LUMA Vision all-in-one system does everything but make coffee.
The catheter has an unprecedented field of view. In real time, it creates a 3D 360° image of the inside of the heart. Reconstructs and visualizes the anatomy of the heart. And checks the A-Fib catheter ablation lesions. The digital scanning can be manipulated at the console—without moving the catheter!
It appears easy to use, navigates well within the heart, takes very little time, and doesn’t require a lot of gear to work.
Though the LUMA Vision all-in-one visualization catheter system is still in development, I predict it will become a major player in the A-Fib field.
