Infographic: A-Fib & Sleep Apnea—The Life-Threatening Risks; Update on GLP-1 Agonists
Updated March 2025:
In my new 2025 AF Symposium report, Weight Loss Drugs and A-Fib, Dr. Donna Ryan of Louisiana State University discusses how the new GLP-1 drugs (Ozempic, Mounjaro and Victoza) help A-Fib patients with sleep apnea as well as weight loss. Read my report Weight Loss Drugs and A-Fib.
Sleep Apnea is Common Among A-Fib Patients
At least 43% of patients with Atrial Fibrillation suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) as well.
Sleep is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They may occur 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound.
There is a direct correlation between Sleep Apnea and A-Fib.
Talk to your doctor about being tested for sleep apnea. There’s now an in-home test that makes it easy (see my post: A-Fib and Sleep Apnea: At-Home Testing).
